Oxygen Media is a cable television programming
network and media company serving women audiences with a mixture of
entertainment and information. Clarity’s investment partners included
Oxygen Media include Vulcan Ventures, TimeWarner Inc., Carsey-Werner-Mandabach,
and Oprah Winfrey.
Case Study
In April 2002, Clarity invested in Oxygen Media.
Clarity was able to leverage its previous investment experiences in
television and notably in Univision Communications, which had many
elements similar to the Oxygen investment thesis: both television
companies served demographically targeted audiences and relied upon
complicated investment and programming agreements with large and/or
powerful strategic partners. Clarity’s Principals played active roles in
the company’s budget processes, in restructuring key management
compensation agreements, in assessing significant program acquisitions,
and in refining the company’s online strategy. During Clarity’s
involvement in Oxygen, the company grew its distribution to over seventy
million households, refocused and reduced its online investment and
presence, shifted its programming mix to include a greater balance of
acquired programs and movies, and re-financed its senior debt on very
favorable terms. In October 2007, Oxygen was sold to NBC Universal for
$925 million.
